From IIT to NDA

It took me one marriage (of my own), an interview call from TISS (for my sis-in-law)  to be able to fulfill my long standing desire of visiting the National Defense Academy (NDA). I was so excited about this opportunity that I almost sat straight in the car as it entered the gates of NDA. Incidentally, I also visited the IIT Bombay campus in the same week though I did not have to go through this long and arduous route to visit an IIT campus.

Disclaimer 1: The goal of this article is not to compare both these eminent institutes but to contrast the two institutes in light of their goals.
Disclaimer 2: The article does not do justice to describing either  IIT or the NDA campus. There is much more to it then what is written below.
A ride to IIT Bombay took us though the crowded and polluted central Bombay. The construction work in front of IIT made it worse, so much that I almost did not notice that we entered IIT. Few days later, a ride to the NDA campus from Pune felt like trekking in the jungles with sign boards leading us to an escape route. The sign board reading “First view of NDA 50 ft ahead” was impressive as if we were to witness a significant architectural wonder. The ambassador taxi, though not intentional, matched perfectly well to the military nature of the academy. Note that most high ranked defense personals still go around in black ambassador cars. The revered NDA campus welcomed us with tight security measures at its entrance. In fact we were even asked “Why are you carrying so much luggage if you were to stay only for a night?”.  As we entered the gates at 10 in the night, we could still see cadets marching around the campus. A few of them pleasantly greeted us with the usual “jai hind sir”, mistaking us as officers. Mahatma Gandhi calls out “undeserved honor” as one of the seven professional sins  and we seemed to have earned the sin within NDA.  Seeing the cadets engage in various sports such as hockey, volleyball at six on a sunday morning seemed like a perfect start that you would want to give to twenty years olds. Contrast this with many IIT graduates who would wake up only during lunch time on a sunday.

The first thing that struck me in the campus is the display of several achievements/accomplishments of the academy. It had real tankers displayed that the Indian Army had captured. A visit to the  squadron/hostel would show off the list of things the each of its cadets have done where as the main campus shows accomplishments of academy as a whole. In fact, NDA has an entire museum dedicated for this. I was hard pressed to find any such thing at IIT. Even if they were there, they were lost amidst dust and discard. This of course does not mean that IITs have nothing to flaunt but I am forced to believe that IITs are being modest. While modesty is good as an individual, but as an institute, showcasing the accomplishments goes a long way to instill pride amongst the fellow and aspiring students. For example, I would have loved to see a list of illustrious alumni at the IIT who I am sure are at the helm of their respective fields now and something that each IITian can take pride in.

Besides the sprawling and widespread campus, the other thing that strikes a visitor is the meticulously well maintained facilities at NDA. My brother-in-law jokingly mentioned that the Bombay stadium at NDA is better maintained then the Wankhade stadium in Bombay. The common room, the squadron entrance, the academic facilities were all spotless. All institutes of the cadre of NDA, such as IITs, IIMs and several others, are institutes which represent the country at international level. These attract international visitors and a well maintained campus such as that of NDA goes a long way to create a lasting impression.  At IIT I could see constructions all around to cater to the increasing student intake while the existing hostels continued to suffer from lack of sanitation and cleanliness. IITs suffer from continuous government pressure to increase student intake, faculty intake, reservations and several political agendas and thus are hardly ever able to allocate attention to better the existing infrastructure.  NDA fortunately do not have to deal with this problem of excessive supply of candidates; in fact they have the reverse of the problem which is too less candidates wanting to get in to the defense services.

For these and several other reasons, IIT failed to provide a strong personality and character as an institute where as NDA came out strong on both. One can feel that he is inside a defense campus when he is in NDA. When in IIT, besides the various department sign boards, its hard to guess  if you are in an technology institute or other wise. To me, IITs seem to have a larger charter and agenda to accomplish then the NDA. As institutes for training students, IITs have long deviated from just producing able engineers to producing able graduates who can take the country forward in any field be it engineering, media, healthcare. NDA, on the contrary, have a very focussed goal of producing only military professionals and it does everything that takes to produce and also retain one.

yes mam i totally agree wid u…given a chance to wake up late on sundays v wil also get up late n der r no doubts abt it..bt da thng is no matter how mch ever restrictions n rules are laid down on us we follow dem by hook or by crook. der wil not be a single guy who wil break it..n if at all dis happens den he has to pay 4 it..da thing is abt followin da rules laid down. if such rules r laid on da iit’s or ne oder institution wil dey follow it..?? or for dem wil it b “rules r meant to break” n da casual attitude of attending classes, as we all see in almost al colleges..i guess in dis case da rulz wil b followed onli if der r internal marks for da attendence..or attendence compulsory 4 attending da exams o sumthng lyk tat bt oderwise deyl not(im jus takin attendence as 1 of da examples)..in da academy da rule of compulsory attending da classes is not used as a carrot to improve da daily attendence of every class so that da teacher feels yes da class is havin good attendence neither it has a direct impact on ur internal n class impression marks. it is jus said “u have to attend” n u have to.
its not onli about da cross-country n da drillz..but it is da wil to keep our almamator always at da zenith. if we r provided with such a gr8 institution den its our responsibilty to maintain its standards.. n tat wil happen onli if we follow da rulz..
.. if 2000 of us at da academy can follow 1000’s of rules laid down on us by jus 1 commandant..(no matter out of compulsion or out of interest)
den y cant da public follow simple rules laid down on dem of not spillin around n not spittin at public places..
if we follow relegiously even des two thngs im sure not onli da iit’s but almost al da roads n dis nation of ours wil becum a better place to live..
**”i have no doubts tat da iit’s r da bst institutions in da world””

you clearly show in ur comment your complete ignorance about the national defence academy
as we kno, being in the army is on thing … having passed through the portals of nda different altogether
who says classes and studies doesn’t require clean environs and natural beauty, it is all the more important as it is the question of development of the mind ………. and the national defence academy does both the things; better than anyone or anywhere else at that….

hey frnd its totally depends on u…….iam a nda cadet….i will definately advice u to join nda….
the things u will get in nda u will neva going to get in IIT.in IIt u hav to work harder to get a very good company job giving u a six-figure salary….but a officer will get everythng besides a six-figure salary.u will learn every game frm riding, trekking, paragliding, shooting, swimming, horsepolo, waterpolo, and many more sports…nearly u become a allrounder.the respect, dignity, fame, value and the foremost thing the privelage to do something for ur country …..only very less get….In IIt frm 5-6 lakhs candidates….10,000 get IIT whereas nda selects only 350..so the probability to get into NDA is less……Its nt so easy rahul……u shud hav dat fire in u…..DO U HAVE IT IN U???

i donot know who inspired you to do this ridiculous job of comparing NDA and IIT………This completely shows what mere knowledge u’ve about NDA. its all incorrect . moreover , u ‘ve described NDA ,it seems , from d view of a mere tourist …….. reality is totally different. lastly , ur endeavour of listing d problem of less candidates wanting to join NDA is completely absurd …….friend ,u need to do a deliberate survey to know how many unfortunate lads have been deprived of such an opportunity just because they weren’t fit enough to be counted among the elite clan of officers from this pious institution .

a person from who has done NDA will be alot different from a person who has done IIT. my bro did nda. 1st year he got the ragada pretty bad!(didnt lyk it) but then, he got used to it and started enjoying it. i have been to NDA and it is best maintained. dunno bout IIT. NDA is something you should never miss but IIT is something you should always try for! both are excellent at their places. but a NDA cleared officer is always more better than an IITan cuz he knows how to enjoy life with all manners. i bet minimum IITans must be having table manners..! lol!

but at the end, it all depends where the mind is happy!

please don’t paint a picture of nda as if seen from the eyes of puneites visiting it on Sunday. there is much more to the national defence academy that you missed. the aura of discipline in the air surrounding the academy, the confidence in the manner of the guys you just saw playing … it is the cradle of leadership, and rightfully so

thanx to you for putting up the disclaimer sir … as it is dearly required

Ma’am, with all due respect, I beg to differ. I’m myself from an army background, and I’ve also cleared NDA as a gentleman cadet. Ma’am, you call it compulsion, we call it life. The Indian Army can bring about a sense of discipline only in this way. Like they say, ”An army without discipline is a bunch of fools wearing the same clothes ”An that is completely true. Whatever negative aspects of the NDA you have brought out, are the ones which make us disciplined, and give us the pride to call ourselves Gentlemen. I, as a kid was also there with my father, ma’am. We both are aware of the ”inside story” and, NDA happenes to be one of the best Army institutes across the globe.
